The Occupational Health and Safety Institute is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that employers implement measures to improve occupational hygiene, occupational health and safety in all the sectors for a safe work environment and a healthy work force. To achieve the national vision 2030 of Zambia being a prosperous middle income country by 2030, the country needs a healthy and productive workforce.

Following the expiry of the 2016 to 2021 Strategic Plan and the alignment of the Institute from Ministry of Health to Ministry of Labour and Social Security, it was inevitable that the old strategic plan be reviewed to pave way for the formulation of the new strategic plan. The plan will provide an operational framework which will allow the Institute to effectively and efficiently provide occupational health and safety services to all the sectors in line with Occupational Health and Safety Act No. 36 of 2010. There was also need to realign the Institute’s activities with the portfolio functions of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security which feeds into the 8^th National Development Plan which has strategies anchored on Economic Transformation and Job Creation, Human and Social Development, Environmental Sustainability and Good Governance Environment.

The 2022 to 2026 Strategic Plan builds on successes, challenges and lessons learnt from the previous strategic plan, while capitalising on the current opportunities to effectively offer occupational health and safety services to the working population to enhance the growth of the industry and the nation as a whole.

The plan details the strategic direction of the Institute for the period 2022 to 2026. It outlines the outcomes to be attained, interventions to be taken to meet the set targets, and roles and responsibilities of the members of staff. The Institute will be guided by the following vision, mission and core values.
